…And He Replied, "I Will Never Work For Someone Else Again!"

This morning on our weekly Monday morning business Zoom call we shared some tips on what NOT to do or say specifically when talking about our financial opportunity.

So in a nutshell my advice is very simply, be careful about how you speak about your own situation. Randy, my mentor and colleague shared that when he was starting out, he was just excited about the opportunity to create something (a business) that was his own and that's simply all he talked about. He has been with this company for more than 35 years now and clearly has been very successful in that regard.

Our Story

I used the example of our own story with my husband starting his own one man accounting practice. Many years ago (Oct 1988 to be exact), he left a very secure 'job' with a prestigious accounting firm to start his own practice and I was his admin person.

At the time, we had 4 small children, I was a stay at home mom, we had a mortgage and car payments, credit card debt and now he had a business with no clients in the foreseeable future. And to make matters even worse, we couldn't even let people know that he now was operating as a sole practitioner because, at the time, it was against the 'institutes' rules and regulations to promote yourself or your business, as 'advertising' was considered 'unprofessional'

So, there we were,

  • No sure source of income coming in;

  • No way to advertise or promote ourselves, and….

  • 4 mouths to feed.

One day shortly after opening a very sparse and small office space, a client came in and asked "how's business?" I was very interested to hear my husband's response so I leaned in to be sure I could hear and. I will never forget it.... 'I will never work for someone else again' came back his voice loud and clear.

Now, it would have been just as easy (maybe easier) for him to say, "oh my gosh, I have 4 children and a wife to feed, rent to pay on this office, a mortgage and car payments and no sure income stream coming in". But no, he said "I WILL NEVER WORK FOR SOMEONE ELSE AGAIN". And, that statement did 2 things:

  1. It told that person that my husband was happy AND determined to make this work no matter what.

  2. It gave the client confidence that he was working with someone who was going to take very good care of him.

I am happy to say, we have never looked back and I am happy to report all four children have survived and thrived (and grand babies are starting to appear).

So as you meet and share your products, services and/or opportunity, just be enthusiastic about the potential and what it has already done for you. Develop and practice your own personal 'comeback' to those tough questions about 'how's your business going’ if it's not yet where you want it to be. But be sure to be careful that what you say is true and meaningful to you ...otherwise it won't work.

And be very mindful about putting out negative messages, EVEN if they are true for you in the moment...what you send out to the universe will come back, multiplied many times over! So let's multiply the good things in life!

In my own business lately I've been investing in some great tools to help me move more of my own business on-line. So I thought I would share this free tool to help anyone interested in building their MLM business using LinkedIn. Enjoy:
